Ethical standards and behavior are the backbone of successful public relations practitioners. Whether you work for a company, agency, or nonprofit, how you conduct business matters.

Be a part of the panel discussion of ethics in public relations for Ethics Month on September 19. Send us your anonymous ethical dilemmas at Our panel of experts will share how they would handle your ethical cases and share some examples of real-life situations they have faced or been involved in solving throughout their careers.

Featured guests will be Kevin Stoker, PhD, director and professor, Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Ted Streuli, former editor for The Journal Record; and Yvette Walker, assistant dean of student affairs and administration at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma.

Attendees will learn:

  • How word choice can change meaning without changing truthfulness.
  • A decision model that emphasizes character, sincerity, and authenticity.
  • About the disruption of traditional media channels.


About the speakers:

Kevin Stoker


Kevin L. Stoker is professor and director of the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has been researching and teaching in media ethics and history for more than 20 years. In ethics, he focuses on the values and virtues that influence professional behavior, particularly in public relations and strategic communication. He is writing a book on paradox and public relations. He previously served as senior associate dean in the College of Media and Communication at Texas Tech University and has held faculty positions at Brigham Young University, Georgia Southern University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He’s been a reporter and freelance writer for newspapers and magazines in Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Utah. He covered the Oklahoma Legislature for the Lawton Constitution and Morning Press.

Ted Streuli


Ted Streuli spent 30 years as a newspaper reporter, editor, and publisher, including 14 years at The Journal Record. He has won numerous writing and editing awards as well as the PRSA Clarus Award and the Oklahoma Business Ethics Consortium's Pilot Award. He serves on numerous nonprofit boards and is a past president of the Oklahoma Press Association.  He has also worked as a square dance caller, an ice hockey referee, and as Zipper the Clown.

Yvette Walker


Yvette Walker is assistant dean for student affairs and administration at Gaylord College at the University of Oklahoma. She joined the university in December 2015. She oversees Gaylord Hall’s technology and also supervises the Broadcast Chief Engineer, and the Building Technology and Resources Coordinator. She works closely with the IT specialists at the College, the director of communication and the director of development. She teaches the Introduction to Media class at Gaylord College and is a member of the OU Diversity Council.

Previously, she was the night news director at The Oklahoman, and was the Edith Kinney Gaylord Media Ethics Chair at the University of Central Oklahoma. At UCO, she won the Vanderford Initiative Award, given by the President for Exceptional Initiative in Support of Character, Civility, Community and Leadership.

She has managed online content and presentation for web sites. Walker has a Master’s degree in media management from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She is a native of Chicago and has also lived in Austin, Dallas, Detroit, Gary, Ind., Kansas City, and Oklahoma City.
